The scholars unanimously agreed that what is obligatory in Wudu is to wash each part once, although washing each part two or three times is recommended. However, persisting in washing each part only once deprives the person of more reward.

There are two ways of wiping the head in Wudu: 1- After wetting the hands in water, you place them at the front of the head and wipe the head until you reach the back of the head, then you bring them back to the front of the head. 2- Wiping the whole head, but in the direction of the hair only, so that the hair is not changed or messed up.

The jurists agreed that it is best to wipe the entire head, but they differed as to whether doing so is obligatory or not. The Malikis and Hanbalis are of the view that it is obligatory to wipe the entire head. The Hanafis and Shafi`is are of the view that it is sufficient to wipe part of the head.

What must be done in Wudu is washing the feet; it is not sufficient to wipe them. But the Sunnah shows that one may wipe over the feet only when wearing leather slippers or socks, subject to the conditions that are well known in the Sunnah.

The majority of scholars view that wiping the ears in Wudu is Sunnah and recommended, but is not obligatory. If a person forgets to wipe his ears, he is fine and his Wudu is valid.
